Governors & Staff
Governor Introduction
The Governing Body carries many legal responsibilities for administering the school. School Governors oversee the general conduct, seek a balanced curriculum, compliance with the law, appoint staff, manage the school budget, set targets and seek improvements wherever possible through action plans. The Local Education Authority makes available to the Governing Body an annual sum of money, much of which has to be spent on specific categories of expenditure, but some has flexibility.
The Governing body meets at least once and more usually twice a term or even more frequently if necessary. The minutes of each meeting are published and available upon request.
There are different categories of Governor, who serve a term of office of 4 years (renewable), and in Voluntary Controlled schools these are:
- Foundation Governors - at least 2, but no more than one quarter. In the case of our two first schools the founding body is the Church of England, and they appoint governors to preserve and develop the religious character of the school.
- LEA Appointed Governors - at least 1, but no more than one fifth. They are appointed by the Local Education Authority (LEA).
- Parent Governors - at least one third. Parents, including carers, of registered pupils are eligible to stand for election. They are elected by other parents at the school. If insufficient parents stand for election, the Governing Body can appoint a Parent Governor.
- Staff Governors - at least two places, but no more than one third, including the Headteacher. Both teaching and support staff at the school are eligible. They are elected by the school staff, and must be paid to work at the school. At least one Staff Governor must be a teacher, in addition to the Headteacher.
- Community Governor - at least one tenth. Appointed by the Governing Body to represent community interests. They can be people who live or work in the community served by the school, or persons who do not work or live close to the school but are committed to the good governance and success of the school. This excludes elected members of the local authority and those eligible to be a Staff Governor.
